Get all your burning questions about braces answered today!
Maybe you or your child could benefit from getting braces but you just aren’t sure. Perhaps you still have so many questions about whether orthodontic treatment is really the best approach for you. If so, our Brooklyn, NY, family dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Galler, is here to answer some of your most popular questions.
Q. When should a child get an orthodontic evaluation?
A. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, once a child reaches seven years old, this is a good time to schedule a visit with our Brooklyn dentist. Coming in at this age is the best option because it could save children from needing more extensive procedures or orthodontic treatments in the future. Of course, this doesn’t mean that teens and adults can’t still benefit from getting an evaluation with us (it’s never too late!).
Q. Will crooked or misaligned teeth straighten out on their own?
A. Unfortunately, this is not likely to happen. In fact, space within your mouth is limited, so if you are already dealing with crowding chances are good that the issue may actually become worse over time.
Q. What should I expect when I come in for a consultation and exam?
A. We will perform a thorough physical examination and also run X-rays so that we can better understand what’s going on with your oral health. Based on our evaluation, we will sit down with you to determine if you have any issues that need to be corrected and whether braces are the best approach.
Q. What kind of braces are right for me?
A. This is a difficult question to answer without first conducting a thorough orthodontic screening. There are different orthodontic treatments out there that will provide more efficient results depending on the issues you want to fix, the severity of those issues, your lifestyle and habits and even your age. These include clear aligners such as Invisalign, as well as traditional metal braces. We would be happy to sit down with you and determine which orthodontic treatment is the best one for you.
Q. How long will it take to get a straight smile?
A. This is something we will be able to determine during your initial consultation. The average length of time that someone wears braces is anywhere from 18 months to two years. Of course, adults who get Invisalign can often get results in as little as one year. Just remember that your treatment time will really depend on the severity of your dental issues, among other factors.
